FileMaker Pro is bundled with FrameReady as per a contractual agreement between FileMaker, Inc and SoftTouch Solutions Inc.
Every seven days (from the original installation data) FMP checks for updates and alerts the user if one is available. Unless you are experience problems, you can disable these notifications under File > Preferences.
If you visit the software update web page, then you will need to locate the updater file specific to your version.

The latest updates are at the top of the page, often prefaced with the NEW keyword.
You are looking for File Maker Pro. You can skip any entries with Server in the name.
Windows users will need to choose 32-bit or 64-bit.
In FrameReady, in the menu bar, click Help
> About FileMaker Pro. In the window that appears, click
the Info button.
The current FMP version, platform
and application architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) is revealed.
For the curious: the Release Notes will contain details on bug fixes relating to FileMaker Pro.
When installing an update to FileMaker Pro, it is recommended
that you disable virus detection software before applying the update,
and re-enable it after you are finished. Additionally, it is recommended
that you make backups of all database files prior to installing an
