Glossary of Terms

  • Check box — A box which can be selected by clicking into it causing an “x” or “check” to appear. Clicking in the box a second time will de-select the item.
  • Client Server — This is a networking term where two or more computers are networked with the benefit of a server. In reference to FrameReady it means that one computer is set up as a server running FileMaker Server which hosts or shares the FrameReady solution on the network. Other computers access FrameReady as clients or guests using regular copies of FileMaker Pro.
  • CMC — Computerized mat cutter.
  • COG — Cost of goods.
  • Complete (on Work Order screen) — When the complete radio button is marked on a work order, it indicates that the actual framing and assembly of the piece is done and it is ready for the customer to pick it up.
  • Consignment — Any artwork or product which is consigned to your store for selling by outside source.
  • Consignment file — This file keeps track of any product items that you have consigned to an outside seller, e.g. interior designer, auctioneer.
  • Contacts file — This file not only keeps track of your customers but anyone else you may need to contact (e.g. suppliers, artists, employees, etc.) by either phone, fax or e-mail.
  • Dialog box — A box which allows entry of information to access further screens as directed.
  • Drop-down list — Presents a list of values which may auto-fill the field.
  • Field — An identified area into which you can enter a value, such as, numbers, text, or date.
  • Find screen — A screen which allows the user to enter search criteria for the file selected. Each file has its own find screen.
  • FMP — FileMaker® Pro database application.
  • FrameReady Multi Site — Refers to a version of FrameReady that permits several remote locations (or stores) to access the program using Remote Desktop Protocol.
  • Group (in Price Codes & Work Order files) — Refers to the division of framing items. All items in the Price Codes file must belong to a Group. Available Groups are: Wood, Metal, Plastic, Extender, Liner, Fillet, Matboard, Fabric, Mat Design, Mounting, Hardware, Glazing, Extra, Fitting, Multi-angle, and Supplies. New groups cannot be added.
  • GUI — graphical user interface
  • Hold on Work Order screen — When the Hold radio button is marked on a work order, it indicates that the customer will be placing the order with you but you should not order the supplies until you hear back from them, e.g. Bringing spouse in to look at it.
  • In-House — When a framing component is done in your shop, as opposed to being sent out or supplied by a vendor, e.g. French Lines.
  • Incomplete radio button — When the Incomplete radio button is marked on a work order, it indicates that the actual assembly of the piece has not been competed and is not ready for the customer to pick up.
  • LAN — Local area network.
  • LE — Limited Edition
  • Line Item — A line/s on an invoice or purchase order to enter data.
  • Media margins — This refers to the area from the edge of the art image to the outside edge of the paper or media.
  • Navigational Palette — The icons at the top of each screen which allow you to move directly to the file selected.
  • Peer to Peer — This is a networking term where two or more computers are networked without the benefit of a server. In reference to FrameReady, it means that one copy of FileMaker is hosting or sharing the files over the network. Other computers on the network can access the files as a guest or client. Both the host and guest are being used to enter data into the system. Replaced with FileMaker Server in 2020.
  • PO — Purchase order.
  • Pop-up menu — A list of items/values which appear when clicking on a field.
  • Price Codes file — File containing items used in framing and items which are cut and sold in pieces, e.g. lengths of moulding, pieces of matboard, glass, etc.
  • Price Structure — Method of pricing by Join, Chop or Length. Pricing can be selected by Vendor or individually.
  • Products file — File containing items sold in their entirety, e.g. paint brushes, posters, jewellery, L/E prints, etc.
  • Radio button — A button (usually circular) found in a grouping which may only have one button selected at any time. Selecting a new button will cause a previous selection to be de-selected.
  • RDP — Remote Desktop Protocol
  • Required Footage — Required footage = (United Inch + (moulding width x 4)) ÷ 6.
  • Revert Field — This field will change the contents of the field back to what it was before your last entry. If the field was blank before typing it will revert to a blank field. If it contained an item number before typing, then it will revert to the number it previously contained.
  • ROI — return on investment
  • Scroll arrows — Small arrows found at the bottom and right side of the screen which move the screen being previewed in the direction of the arrow.
  • Set Price — Can be called Labor charge. It is a fixed price which is not affected by UI, such as a minimal cost required for you to work on a component (frame, mat, etc.).
  • SRP — Suggested Retail Price For Moulding it could be per foot. For retail items it’s the manufacturer’s suggested selling price to the customer.
  • Status Toolbar — Area at the top of the screen which can be revealed or hidden by clicking on the Status Bar button at the bottom left corner. The status toolbar can be identified by the presence of a flip book icon showing the number of records in the database and whether or not they have been sorted. It also gives you access to the Operators.
  • Status Toolbar toggle Button — A little button located on the bottom of the screen immediately to the left of the word “Browse”.
  • STS — Adatasol Inc., formerly SoftTouch Solutions, Inc.
  • Supplier (not Vendor) — The manufacturer of the moulding, matboard, etc.
  • Threshold — The amount of stock you always want to have available. It will trigger the reorder field.
  • Toggle ruler — Reveals or hides a measurement guide at the top of screen. It provides many word processing functions, such as, fonts, tabs, alignment, etc.
  • UI — Frame Width plus Frame Height. It is rounded up to the nearest integer, e.g. 29 3/8 rounds up to 30.
  • United Inch — Frame Width plus Frame Height. It is rounded up to the nearest integer, e.g. 29 3/8 rounds up to 30.
  • UPC — Unified Product Code = barcode
  • Vendor (not Supplier) — Any company from which you order your moulding, matboard, etc. The vendor may be the manufacturer of the product or a distributor of it and has a record in the Contacts File.
  • White Space — Area of paper (or media) between the print image and the inside edge of the bottom mat. White space is usually required on Limited Edition prints to reveal signature and edition number. It can also be used to indicate the amount of white fabric to be revealed on a piece of needlework. This is especially useful after the piece has been stretched.
