Multiple Find Requests

While in the find mode, you can narrow down your search criteria by selecting additional items, e.g. find all customers who are both photographers and who also want your newsletter.

However, sometimes you want to find all customers who are photographers as well as all customers who prefer newsletters. This is where we use multiple search requests.

How to Perform a Multiple Find

Example One: Multiple Search Criteria on One Request

Technically, this is known as an "and" operation.

  1. On the Main Menu, click the Find Contact button.

  2. Click on the checkbox of the first keyword, e.g. photographer and then click on the checkbox of the second keyword, e.g. newsletter.

This is a single search request.

  3. Click the Perform Find button.

A list view of all contacts who meet both criteria appears.

Example Two: Separate Search Criteria on Two Requests

Technically, this is known as an "or" operation.

  1. On the Main Menu, click the Find Contact button.

  2. Click on the checkbox of the first keyword, e.g. photographer.

This is our first search request. Next, we are going to create a second request.

  3. If the FileMaker Pro status toolbar is not visible, click the Show or Hide Status Bar icon. It looks like this:

  4. From the status toolbar, click the New Request button.

Or from the menubar choose Requests > Add New Request.

Or use the keyboard and type Ctrl + N

This creates a second search request. You may notice the request ID changes to 2. You can use the navigation buttons to switch between requests.

  5. Click on the checkbox of the second keyword, newsletter.

  6. Click the Perform Find button.

A list view of all contacts who meet one or the other or both criteria appears.
